Not working for anyone in particular has proven the most difficult part of freelance life for me. When I have a publication behind me, I know the look they want, I can approach people with authority, and I editorial guidance. When I just head out to shoot because I’m already out and I may as well, I feel rudderless. I have no particular aesthetic to aim for, I have no editorial guidance, I have no authority. More often than not I end up trying to shoot everything and in the process ending up with nothing. We can call this reason #457 why I’m terrible at freelancing.
